Satirical novel published in 1759 that is the best-known work by Voltaire. It is a savage denunciation of metaphysical optimism--as espoused by the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz--that reveals a world of horrors and folly. In this philosophical fantasy, naive Candide sees and suffers such misfortune that he ultimately rejects the philosophy of his tutor Doctor Pangloss, who claims that "all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds." Candide and his companions--Pangloss, his beloved Cunegonde, and his servant Cacambo--display an instinct for survival that provides them hope in an otherwise somber setting. When they all retire together to a simple life on a small farm, they discover that the secret of happiness is "to cultivate one's garden," a practical philosophy that excludes excessive idealism and nebulous metaphysics.　

Dare I say it? Dare I say that I, a plain, prosaic lieutenant in therepublican service have done the incredible things here set out for the loveof a woman--for a chimera in female shape; for a pale, vapid ghost ofwoman-loveliness? At times I tell myself I dare not: that you will laugh, and cast me aside as a fabricator; and then again I pick up my pen andcollect the scattered pages, for I MUST write it--the pallid splendour ofthat thing I loved, and won, and lost is ever before me, and will not beforgotten. The tumult of the struggle into which that vision led me stillthrobs in my mind, the soft, lisping voices of the planet I ransacked for itssake and the roar of the destruction which followed me back from thequest drowns all other sounds in my ears! I must and will write--itrelieves me; read and believe as you list.

By the American essayist, poet, and leader of the Transcendentalist movement in the early nineteenth century. He is often identified as the first writer to develop a uniquely American literary style and vision, rather than following in the footsteps of his contemporaries who were strongly influenced by their British cultural heritage. He was considered one of the great orators of the time. His outspoken, uncompromising support for abolitionism later in life caused protest and jeers from crowds when he spoke on the subject. He formulated and first expressed the philosophy of Transcendentalism in his essay Nature (1836) which was the first significant work to establish this new way of looking at the Americas and its raw, natural environment. Emerson's Collected Essays: First (1841) and Second (1844) Series, including his seminal essays on History, Self-Reliance, Compensation, Spiritual Laws, Love, Friendship, Prudence, Heroism, The Over-soul, Circles, Intellect, and Art in the first and The Poet, Experience, Character, Manners, Gifts, Nature, Politics, and Nominalist and Realist in the second, is considered to be one of the 100 greatest books of all time.
