The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is a popular 1876 novel about a young boy growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. The story is set in the town of "St Petersburg", inspired by Hannibal, Missouri, where Mark Twain grew up. In the story's introduction, Twain notes: Most of the adventures recorded in this book really occurred; one or two were experiences of my own, the rest those of boys who were schoolmates of mine. Huck Finn is drawn from life; Tom Sawyer also, but not from an individual—he is a combination of the characteristics of three boys whom I knew, and therefore belongs to the composite order of architecture.

A death takes place in Boston in the early 1900's gaslight era, and chronicles the mysterious death of 62-year-old John Darrow, who openly stated having a premonition that he was going to be murdered. The death takes place in a closed room in which there are 5 other people: the family physician Dr. Ned (the story's narrator) Gwen (the victim's beautiful daughter), Maitland (our protagonist; a chemist/lawyer), and two other guests of the family. All the doors and windows are closed except the window on the East side which is open about 6 inches. Darrow is in the center of the room with the other five in different parts of the room. He was seated on a high backed chair, a full 8 feet away from the open east side window. Is it a natural death, a suicide or murder most foul? A detecting competition arises between George Maitland and police Inspector Godin, reportedly the best detective in the U.S., who concludes his investigation overnight.

THE SURVIVORS OF THE CHANCELLOR was issued in 1875. Shipwrecks occur in other of Verne's tales; but this is his only story devoted wholly to such a disaster. In it the author has gathered all the tragedy, the mystery, and the suffering possible to the sea.

Dr. Walter T. Goodwin is sailing back to New York after a botanical expedition to the South Seas when he meets his old friend, Dr. David Throckmartin. The heartbroken Throckmartin relates a haunting tale to Dr. Goodwin-a tale of a tropical island and a strange stone door through which a hypnotic otherworldly light shines. Throckmartin tells of how the light had captured his companions and of his own powerlessness to stop it. When his friend disappears, Dr. Goodwin sets out to find the source of the mysterious moonlight. Little does he realize how formidable a foe he has pitted himself against. First published in 1918, The Moon Pool is commonly considered to be the inspiration of the ABC series LOST. Now, Overlook is pleased to introduce this classic of science fiction. Lynnette Porter, Ph.D., bestselling author of Unlocking the Meaning of Lost, has provided an all-new introduction.
