南极之谜
儒勒·凡尔纳
This is Jules Verne's original sequel to a book that had fired his own youthful imagination but which he felt to be incomplete: Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym. The narrative proceeds to build up our expectations of a spectacular "revelation" as only Verne can. At the same time the novel is very scientific and detailed. This expedition to the South Pole was based on a real person and an authentic journey. How will it end? What is the "mystery"? Is it a "lost civilization" or a definitive answer what was that great white shrouded figure that Pym witnessed in real life? This fantastic and exciting story by one of the world's best writers belongs in every Jules Verne library! Not to be missed!

Lieutenant Eve Dallas keeps the streets of New York City safe in this extraordinary series. But even she makes mistakes, and is haunted by those she couldn't save - and the killers she couldn't capture. When the body of a young brunette is found in East River Park, artfully positioned and marked by signs of prolonged and painful torture, Eve is catapulted back to nine years ago. A man the media tagged "The Groom" - because he put silver rings on the fingers of his victims - had the city on edge with a killing spree that took the lives of four women in fifteen days. But now, The Groom has returned - and Eve's determined to finish him. Familiar with his methods, Eve knows that he has already grabbed his next victim. Time is running out on another woman's life. When it turns out that the dead woman was employed by Eve's billionaire husband, Roarke, she brings him onto the case - a move that proves fitting when it becomes chillingly clear that the killer has made it personal. The victim was washed in products from a store Roarke owns, and laid out on a sheet his company manufactures. And chances are that he's working up to the biggest challenge of his illustrious career - abducting a woman who will test his skills on every level and who promises to give him days and days of pleasure before she dies: Eve. Ah! The clock is always slow; It is later than you think. —ROBERT W. SERVICE And music pours on mortals Her magnificent disdain. —RALPH WALDO EMERSON

"The Beetle" may have outsold "Dracula" when it first came out, but it's easy to see after reading it why "Dracula" is the one best remembered. The idea of a man turning himself into a beetle at will is too bizarre to fall into the "it could have once happened" category, while with "Dracula" every part of the world has some form of the vampire legend. The one place where "The Beetle" does better than "Dracula" is in the narration. Marsh limits his tale to three narrators whose stories overlap, where Stoker jumps back and forth between various letters and journals. Unfortunately, the characters are poorly drawn and prone to utter nonsense intended to be either witty or clever and come across as neither. And Marsh has no van Helsing to explain things. The closest he has is the detective at the end, who should have entered the picture sooner since he seems to be the only one with any sense. "The Beetle" isn't a bad book, but it's no classic either. It reads more as a cross between an expanded "Weird Tales" adventure and a condensed "Penny Dreadful".
