John Updike
Winner of the 1982 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. This third novel in Updike's Rabbit series finds Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, a one-time high school basketball star, has reached a paunchy middle-age without straying from Brewer, Pennsylvania, the downtrodden, fictional city of his birth. Harry and Janice, his wife of twenty-two years, live comfortably, having inherited her late father's Toyota dealership. He is indeed rich, but Harry's persistent problems, including his wife's drinking, his troubled son's schemes, his libido, and spectres from his past, complicate life. Having achieved a lifestyle that would have embarrassed his working-class parents, Harry is not greedy, but neither is he ever quite satisfied. Harry nurses a crush on a country-club friend's young wife, dangerously seeking approval. Nevertheless he is unable to read the warning signs.

Set in the Caucasus between the Black and Caspian Seas, The Centaur centres on Terence O'Malley, a journalist of mystical temperament who is studying the peoples of the area. O'Malley, at odds with the pace and materialism of the modern world, rejects this way of life and instead countenances a return to nature which he interprets as a sense of kinship with the universe. This mystical novel weaves a fascinating tale while, at the same time, making a passionate plea for a lifestyle that is closer to nature.

One of series of children's books published between 1910-1920 about two boys who run away to join the circus. "No call to the heart of the youth of America finds a readier response than the call of the billowing canvas, the big red wagons, the crash of the circus band and the trill of the ringmaster's whistle. It is a call that captures the imagination of old and young alike, and so do the books of this series capture and enthrall the reader, for they were written by one who, besides weilding a master pen, has followed the sawdust trail from coast to coast, who knows the circus people and the sturdy manliness of those who do and dare for the entertainment of millions of circus-goers when the grass is green. Mr. Darlington paints a true picture of circus life."

Go Tell It on the Mountain is a 1953 semi-autobiographical novel by James Baldwin. The novel examines the role of the Christian Church in the lives of African-Americans, both as a source of repression and moral hypocrisy and as a source of inspiration and community. It also, more subtly, examines racism in the United States. The story is characteristic of a bildungsroman. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Go Tell It on the Mountain 39th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. Time Magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005.
