Tropic of Cancer is a novel by Henry Miller, first published in 1934 by the Obelisk Press in Paris, France. Its publication in 1961 in the United States by Grove Press led to an obscenity trial that was one of several that tested American laws on pornography in the 1960s. While famous for its frank and often graphic depictions of sex, the book is also widely regarded as an important masterpiece of 20th century literature. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Tropic of Cancer 50th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. Time magazine included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. The novel included a preface credited to Anais Nin (although allegedly penned by Miller himself). The book was distributed by Frances Steloff at her Gotham Book Mart, in defiance of censorship pressures.

To Messrs. Harper & Bothers and Henry Mills Alden whose friendliness and fair dealing I am glad of this chance to record

This delightful and (in its way) almost obscure Tom Sawyer story picks up in the aftermath of Tom and Huck's triumphal return from the pages of Huckleberry Finn: Tom, always looking for trouble, finds it when he sets out to become Hannibal's First Traveler. Tom, Huck, and Jim find themselves kidnapped by a mad inventor, sailing cross the Atlantic and into Arabian adventure on a hot-air balloon -- and that's only the beginning! Highly recommended; like all of Twain, a pleasure to read.

The Assistant District Attorney glanced down at the papers in his hand and then up at the well-dressed, stockily built man occupying the witness stand. His manner was conciliatory.

Since first appearing in All-Story Weekly magazine in 1914, Burroughs's tale of a secret prehistoric world still in existence has remained popular both in print and as fodder for numerous films. This commemorative edition offers the full text along with a map of the fictional land of Pellucidar, illustrations, a glossary, and both a new introduction and an afterword on the science used in the story. This may be a little corny by today's standards, but it's still fun.
