Excerpt from book: This is followed by the gobble-gobble, moo-moo, baa- baa, etc., as long as the laureate's imagination and the infant's breath hold good. The tune is pretty and I do not know, or did not, when I was young, a more fascinating lyric. Thornycroft House must have belonged to a country The sitting kens gentleman once upon a time, or to more than one; men who built on a bit here and there once in a hundred years, until finally we have this charmingly irregular and dilapidated whole. You go up three steps into Mrs. Heaven's room, down two into mine, while Phoebe's is up in a sort of turret with long, narrow lattices opening into the creepers. There are crooked little staircases, passages that branch off into other passages and lead nowhere in particular; I can't think of a better house in which to play hide and seek on a wet day. In front, what was once, doubtless, a green, is cut up into greens; to wit, a vegetable garden, where the onions, turnips, and potatoes grow cosily up to the very door- sill ; the utilitarian aspect of it all being varied by some scarlet-runners and a scattering of poppies on either side of the path. The Belgian hares have their habitation in a corner fifty feet distant; one large inclosure for poultry lies just outside the sweetbriar hedge ; the others, with all the houses and coops, are in the meadow at the back, where also our tumbler pigeons are kept. Phoebe attends to the poultry ; it is her department. Mr. Heaven has neither the force nor the finesse required, and the gentle reader who thinks these qualities unneeded in so humble a calling has only to spend a few days at Thornycroft to be convinced. Mrs. Heaven would be of use, but she is dressing the Square Baby in the morning and putting him to bed at night just at the hours when the feathe...

The Well at the World's End is a fantasy novel by the British artist, poet, and author William Morris. It was first published in 1896 and has been reprinted a number of times since, most notably in two parts as the twentieth and twenty-first volumes of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series in August and September 1970. It is also available in one volume along with a similar Morris tale, The Wood Beyond the World, in On the Lines of Morris' Romances: Two Books that Inspired J. R. R. Tolkien. Using language with elements of the medieval tales which were his models, Morris tells the story of Ralph of Upmeads, the fourth and youngest son of a minor king, who sets out, contrary to his parents' wishes, to find knightly adventure and seek the Well at the World's End, a magic well which will confer a near-immortality and strengthened destiny on those who drink from it. Ralph meets a mysterious lady who has drunk from the well, and they become lovers. However, she is killed, and with the help of Ursula, another maiden whom he meets upon the way, Ralph eventually attains the Well.

  And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,   Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.    If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD.

1:1 [hgb]  论 到 从 起 初 原 有 的 生 命 之 道 ， 就 是 我 们 所 听 见 所 看 见 ， 亲 眼 看 过 ， 亲 手 摸 过 的 。      [kjv]  That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;     [bbe]  That which was from the first, which has come to our ears, and which we have seen with our eyes, looking on it and touching it with our hands, about the Word of life 1:2 [hgb]  （ 这 生 命 已 经 显 现 出 来 ， 我 们 也 看 见 过 ， 现 在 又 作 见 证 ， 将 原 与 父 同 在 ， 且 显 现 与 我 们 那 永 远 的 生 命 ， 传 给 你 们 ） 。      [kjv]  (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)     [bbe]  (And the life was made clear to us, and we have seen it and are witnessing to it and giving you word of that eternal life which was with the Father and was seen by us);

This is a charming tale about a mother's unconditional and gratifying love for her children. It also highlights the fact that what fate holds in store for each of us is never known. Harte has brilliantly drawn the most unusual characters that pursue life and struggle through it. An amazing narrative!
