The Beautiful and Damned, first published by Scribner's in 1922, is F. Scott Fitzgerald's second novel. The novel provides a portrait of the Eastern elite during the Jazz Age, exploring New York Café Society. As with his other novels, Fitzgerald's characters are complex, especially in their marriage and intimacy, much like how he treats intimacy in Tender Is the Night. The book is believed to be largely based on Fitzgerald's relationship and marriage with Zelda Fitzgerald.

Sparks returns to characters from The Notebook (1996) and writes about Allie and Noah Calhoun's oldest daughter, Jane, and her husband, Wilson. As their thirtieth anniversary approaches, Wilson realizes that he loves Jane now more than ever and worries that his neglect (he completely forgot their twenty-ninth anniversary) may have finally driven her away. Wilson plans on showing Jane how much he loves her, but then their oldest daughter, Anna, announces that she and her boyfriend are getting married and asks if they can plan a small utilitarian wedding on her parents' anniversary. Jane agrees to share the date and convinces Anna to have a formal wedding; something that Jane missed. Jane is surprised by Wilson's willingness to work and ability to come up with truly miraculous arrangements. This sort of involvement is out of character for Wilson, a workaholic estate attorney in New Bern, North Carolina, but he really is determined to change, and Sparks is at his romantic best in this tender love story about a flawed hero trying to right his wrongs.

Kindergarten-Grade 5-Joss Ackland reads 14 personal favorites from Grimm, some of which will be new to adults as well as children. Even familiar tales like "Cinderella" and "Little Red Riding Hood" will seem a little unfamiliar as the older versions of the stories are shared. "Cinderella" does not contain a fairy godmother; good fortune comes to the heroine through a kind bird who perches in a hazel bush growing from Cinderella's dead mother's grave. The menacing wolf in "Little Red Riding Hood" is dispatched by the huntsman. However, for listeners who think that the story ended there, Ackland reveals that Little Red Riding Hood ventured into the wood again and was approached by another wolf, equally threatening. Learning their lesson the first time, Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother drown the second wolf. Among the other tales are: "Snow White and Rose Red," "Rapunzel," "The Singing Bone," "Rumpelstiltskin," "Faithful John," "The Nixie of the Mill Pond," "The Mouse, the Bird and the Sausage," "The Sleeping Beauty," and four others. The rich style of these stories has an antique quality, and there is no attempt to modernize them. Likewise, there is no attempt to launder the tales to remove the violent justice or merciless cruelty heaped upon the heroes and heroines. The sound quality is excellent, and Ackland is a remarkable reader who uses his expressive voice to bring out the drama inherent in these stories. Listeners seeking authentic versions of these classic tales will find a unique resource in this collection. School media specialists and public librarians will find this an excellent addition to their folktale collections.ANancy L. Persuasion is Jane Austen's last completed novel. She began it soon after she had finished Emma, completing it in August, 1816. She died, aged 41, in 1817; Persuasion was published in December of that year (but dated 1818). Persuasion is connected with Northanger Abbey not only by the fact that the two books were originally bound up in one volume and published together two years later, but also because both stories are set partly in Bath, a fashionable health resort with which Jane Austen was well acquainted, having lived there from 1801 to 1805.

Niccolo Machiavelli, the first great Italian historian, and one of the most eminent political writers of any age or country, was born at Florence, May 3, 1469. He was of an old though not wealthy Tuscan family, his father, who was a jurist, dying when Niccolo was sixteen years old. We know nothing of Machiavelli’s youth and little about his studies. He does not seem to have received the usual humanistic education of his time, as he knew no Greek.1 The first notice of Machiavelli is in 1498 when we find him holding the office of Secretary in the second Chancery of the Signoria, which office he retained till the downfall of the Florentine Republic in 1512. His unusual ability was soon recognized, and in 1500 he was sent on a mission to Louis XII. of France, and afterward on an embassy to C?sar Borgia, the lord of Romagna, at Urbino. Machiavelli’s report and description of this and subsequent embassies to this prince, shows his undisguised admiration for the courage and cunning of C?sar, who was a master in the application of the principles afterwards exposed in such a skillful and uncompromising manner by Machiavelli in his Prince.
